Alright, so the other day, me and a couple of friends decided we absolutely had to try that game, Chained Together. Looked like hilarious chaos, right? The catch was, I’m on my PC, one friend’s got a different setup, maybe thinking about console later, who knows. The big question popped up: can we even play this thing together?
Digging into it
So, first thing I did was boot up my PC and check the game page where I got it. Looked through the features list, descriptions, all that jazz. Didn’t see a big flashy “CROSSPLAY ENABLED” sign, which, you know, is usually the first clue. Not a great start, but sometimes it’s hidden or called something weird.

Next step, I just started searching around online. Typed in stuff like “Chained Together cross platform”, “play Chained Together PC with friends not on PC”, you get the idea. Found a lot of other people asking the same exact question, which told me I wasn’t alone in wanting this.
Trying to Connect
Okay, so reading through forums and discussions, it seemed like the main way people were playing was through Steam. If everyone’s on Steam, inviting is pretty straightforward, standard stuff. That worked fine for another friend who also had it on PC via Steam.
But the cross-platform dream? That felt way more shaky. I didn’t see any official word saying “yes, buy it anywhere and play with anyone”. It felt very much like it was platform-by-platform right now.
- I tried hosting a game.
- Looked for any kind of ‘cross-platform’ invite option. Didn’t see one.
- Thought maybe there was a room code system that worked across platforms. Generated a code.
- Sent it to my friend, just to see what would happen on their end if they hypothetically had it elsewhere. No dice.
The Situation Right Now
So, after messing around for a bit and reading what others were saying, the conclusion I came to was pretty simple. As of when I tried, getting Chained Together working between different ecosystems (like PC Steam vs. a potential console version, or even different PC stores sometimes) wasn’t really a built-in, easy-peasy thing.
It seems primarily designed for people on the same platform, especially Steam, to link up easily. Which is fine, Steam’s invite system is usually solid. But for true crossplay, connecting everyone regardless of where they bought it or what machine they’re using? Didn’t seem to be in the cards at that moment.
My takeaway? If you and all your friends are getting it on Steam, you’re probably golden. Go forth and suffer together climbing that weird tower. If your group is split across different platforms or stores, you might wanna hold off or double-check if any updates have specifically added that crossplay feature since I last looked. For us, it meant putting that specific plan on hold for a bit. Still looks fun, just gotta get everyone on the same page, platform-wise!
