Well, howdy there! Let’s gab a bit about them fellas in blue, the umpires in that big baseball league, the Major League, you know? Folks always wonderin’ how much they rake in, so let’s get down to it, plain and simple like.
The Big Bucks, or Not So Big?
Now, I hear tell these umpires ain’t exactly starvin’. They make a pretty penny, that’s for sure. Some folks say the average joe umpire gets around 300,000 dollars a year. That’s a whole lotta hay, ain’t it? But it ain’t all the same for everyone, mind you.
If you’re just startin’ out, fresh off the farm, so to speak, you might only get around 150,000 dollars. Still not chicken feed, though! But if you been around the block a few times, seen a whole lotta pitches and strikes, well, you could be makin’ upwards of 450,000 dollars! That’s more than most folks around here see in a lifetime, I reckon.
- Newbie Umps: Around $150,000 a year.
- Average Joes: About $300,000 a year.
- Old-Timers: Up to $450,000 a year!
Playoff Pay and That Joe West Fella
And when them playoffs roll around, that’s when the money really starts flowin’. They get extra for workin’ them games, see? I heard tell it’s somethin’ like 20,000 dollars for the whole series, plus they get their travel and stayin’ money covered. Heck, that’s more than I made sellin’ my prize-winning pickles at the county fair!
Now, there was this one umpire, Joe West, they say he was the top dog, been umpirin’ for over 40 years! He just retired not too long ago. I bet he made a whole heap of money, bein’ at it that long and all. They don’t just tell you how much these fellas make, you gotta kinda guess, but I reckon he was doin’ alright.
More Than Just Yellin’ “Strike!”
But it ain’t just about standin’ there and yellin’ “strike!” You gotta be sharp as a tack to be an umpire in the big leagues. They gotta have good eyes, like 20/20 vision they say. And they gotta be in decent shape, can’t be too hefty, you know? It ain’t easy work, that’s for sure. Gotta make quick calls, and sometimes them players and managers get riled up somethin’ fierce!
Game Pay and Extra Innings
For each game they do in a regular season it is estimated around a couple of thousand dollars. And if the series goes to seven games, they make a little less per game but the total pay is still more. It is estimated that they get over $2,800 per game if the series goes all the way. It ain’t bad work if you can get it, I tell ya.
And get this, if a game goes into extra innings, they don’t get paid no more. One umpire said he got hit in the cup, and on top of the pain, he had to work extra innings and didn’t get a penny more! That don’t seem fair, does it? But I guess that’s just part of the job.
So, How Much Do They REALLY Make?
So, to sum it all up, these MLB umpires, they make good money. From around 110,000 dollars to over 430,000 dollars a season, dependin’ on how long they been at it. That’s a whole lot more than most folks, and they get extra for the playoffs too. It ain’t a walk in the park, though. Gotta have good eyes, be in shape, and put up with a whole lot of hollerin’. But for that kinda money, I reckon it’s worth it.
It is really an impressive salary for an umpire in Major League Baseball, isn’t it? Makes you wonder if it’s harder to hit a baseball or call a strike.
