Alright, so I wanted to figure out this whole “max level” thing in Skyrim. I’d heard different stuff, and I was curious about how high I could really push my character.
First, I started a new game. Figured a clean slate was the best way to go about this. I didn’t want any weird mod interactions or old save glitches messing things up.

Then I spent, like, forever just grinding skills. I chopped wood until my arms ached (virtually, of course). I crafted a million iron daggers. I sneaked around Whiterun picking pockets until the guards probably knew me by name. Anything to level up those skills, I did it.
The key, I realized, was the “Legendary” skill thing. Once a skill hits 100, you can make it Legendary. This resets the skill to 15, and you get back any perk points you spent in that tree. And, crucially, it lets you keep leveling up that skill again. It lets you level up that skill and contribute to your overall level.
Going Legendary
- Hit 100 in a skill.
- Open the Skills menu.
- Make it Legendary (The game will tell you the control).
- Skill resets to 15, perk points refunded.
- Repeat.
So, I started making skills Legendary as soon as I hit 100. Went through all the combat skills, magic skills, thieving skills…everything. Each time, the skill went back to 15, and I started the grind all over again.
It took ages. Seriously, ages. But, by doing that there is no level cap, you are able to gain levels as much as you want.
So there you have it. My experiment proved it. No hard level cap. Just endless grinding, if you’re into that sort of thing! The key is the “Legendary Skill”.
