So, I heard about this Senior Open, right? Sounds interesting, you know, for us seasoned folks. I went ahead and did a bit of digging to see what it’s all about.
First, I looked up the prize money for this year. Turns out, they had a total purse of $2.85 million. Not too bad, huh? I found out that 74 pro golfers played all four rounds at this place called Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland. And they all got a piece of the pie, which is pretty cool.
Then I started thinking about the winner’s share. I saw somewhere that the top prize in some grand final was 10,000 something. But for this Senior Open, the winner, some guy named K.J. Choi, walked away with $447,800! Can you believe that? That’s a lot of dough!
I was curious about how they split up the rest of the money. I mean, even the runner-up got $298,680. These are big, big numbers. They had 156 players in total, so there is a lot to divvy up.
But then I read that even though this is a big deal, it’s not the biggest in senior golf. There’s this thing called the U.S. Senior Open with a $4 million purse. That’s even crazier. And another one, the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, had a $3.5 million.
I also discovered that the money won in these tournaments counts as official money on some tours called the PGA Tour Champions and the European Senior Tour. Sounds complicated, but basically, it’s legit.
Anyway, here’s what I did:
- Searched for the total prize money of the 2024 Senior Open.
- Checked how many players got paid.
- Looked up the winner’s share and who won it.
- Compared it to other big senior golf tournaments.
- Found out that the money is considered official on major golf tours.
It was a fun little research project. Learned a lot about senior golf and the kind of money involved. It is truly amazing, huh?
