So, I was super hyped to jump into Payday 3 the other day. I mean, who doesn’t love a good heist, right? I got everything installed, fired it up, and BAM! Hit with this annoying “failed to fetch game config data” error. Talk about a buzzkill.
First thing I did, like any sane person, was just restart the game. You know, the classic “turn it off and on again” trick. No dice. Still staring at that same error message. Okay, time to get serious.

Troubleshooting Time
Next up, I went straight to verifying the game files. I use Steam, so it’s pretty easy.
- I went to my Game Library.
- Right-clicked on Payday 3.
- Selected Properties.
- Then clicked “Local Files”.
- Finally, I clicked the button to “Verify integrity of game files…”
It took a bit, chugging along, checking everything. I was really hoping this would be the fix. But, nope. Still nothing. Error’s still there, mocking me.
Okay, getting a little frustrated now. I figured maybe it was my internet acting up, even though everything else was working fine. I did the whole router reboot dance – unplugged it, waited like 30 seconds (felt like forever), plugged it back in. Waited for everything to come back online, launched the game… and still got that darn error.
Digging Deeper
Alright, time to hit the forums. I figured I couldn’t be the only one with this problem. And yeah, sure enough, tons of people were talking about it. There were a few suggestions floating around.
Some folks were saying it might be a firewall issue. I checked my firewall settings, made sure Payday 3 was allowed through. I even tried disabling the firewall completely, just to see. Still no luck.

I saw someone mention something about running the game as an administrator. Right-clicked the game’s shortcut, chose “Run as administrator,” held my breath… and… STILL that stupid error. Seriously?!
The Defeat
Honestly, by this point, I was pretty much out of ideas. I’d tried all the basic stuff, and even some of the not-so-basic stuff. Nothing worked.
I’m going to wait a bit,Maybe it is something on the server-side, hopefully a new update can fix this thing.
