Alright, so I spent a good chunk of time playing my Druid in Diablo 4, getting pretty far, you know? But then I kept seeing these awesome looking Sorcerers slinging spells, and I thought, man, I wanna try that!
So, my first instinct was to look around in the menus while I was logged in with my Druid. I opened up the character screen, the inventory, even the skill tree page. I was kinda expecting, like, a button somewhere that says “Change Class” or something similar. Spent a few minutes clicking around, but nope, nothing like that popped up. Checked the game settings too, just in case it was hidden away there.

Turns out, you actually can’t change the class of a character you’ve already made. Yeah, I was a bit surprised too. Once you pick ‘Druid’ or ‘Barbarian’ or whatever, that character is locked into that class forever.
So here’s what I actually had to do:
It was simpler than I thought, but also meant starting over, which was the main thing.
- First, I had to log out from my Druid character. This took me back to the main character selection screen, where you see all the characters you’ve created lined up.
- Then, I looked for an empty slot or the option that usually says something like ‘Create New Character’. Clicked on that one.
- This brought me right back to the very beginning of making a character, just like when I first started the game.
- This time, when the class selection screen appeared, I specifically chose ‘Sorcerer’.
- I went through the whole customization process again – picking the look, the name, all that stuff.
- Finally, I hit ‘Start Game’ with my brand new Sorcerer.
And that was it! I was now playing as a Sorcerer. The big takeaway, though, is that this new Sorcerer was level 1. All the progress, the gear, the levels I had on my Druid? Still safely on the Druid character. They are totally separate. You don’t transfer anything over besides maybe some account-wide stuff like unlocked mounts or certain renown rewards.
So, you’re not really ‘changing’ your character’s class, you’re just making a completely new character with a different class. It’s a fresh start. Kinda makes sense, forces you to experience the game again from a different perspective, I guess. But yeah, no magic button to instantly swap your level 50 Barbarian into a level 50 Rogue, unfortunately. Had to learn that one myself!
