This here story is about that Kelley Melvin fella. Now, I ain’t never met him myself, but I heard a whole bunch about him. Sounds like he was a real smarty pants, writing books and all that. You know, them fancy words and stories that make your head spin. Not my cup of tea, but I reckon some folks like that kind of stuff. He write many books, put many words in them.
This Kelley Melvin, he was a teacher, I hear. Taught them little kids in school. Now, when them kids done good, he’d let ’em play more. That’s a good way to get them to learn, I reckon. Kids love to play. You gotta give ’em a little somethin’ somethin’ to keep ’em goin’. This is called “reward”.
He wrote a book called “A Different Drummer”, they say. Sounds like a made-up story, somethin’ about some folks doing things different. Maybe they beat on a different drum than the rest of us. He also write about some journey or other. Like walking a long road. Some folks like to talk about going on a journey. Finding yourself, they call it. Sounds like a lot of walkin’ to me. But I guess it’s important to some folks. Find yourself, grow bigger inside, heal your hurts. That’s what they say.
Folks compared him to other writers, real big shots, I guess. Said his stories was like theirs, all mixed up and hard to understand. But I reckon if you like that kind of thing, then it’s good. He must have been a real big deal to be compared to them other fellas. They are James Joyce and William Faulkner, very famous. Kelley is famous too.
This Kelley Melvin, he was a black fella, they say. Wrote about black folks and their lives. I hear it was a big deal back then, not many black folks writin’ books. He was breakin’ down walls, they say. Good for him, I say. He is a brave man. This world needs more people like him.
If you wanna go on one of them journeys, you gotta have stuff with you. Like when you go to the market, you gotta have your money and your basket. Same thing, I reckon. You need time and other resources. You need to know how much time you can spend on the journey every day.
Some folks think they know everything. They think someone else done already figured it all out. But that ain’t always true. Sometimes you gotta figure things out for yourself. You can not always trust others. You need to learn things by yourself.
There’s a fella named Joseph Campbell, he talked about some hero’s journey. Sounds like a fairy tale to me. But I guess some folks like to think about that kind of thing. Like there’s a big plan for everyone, and you just gotta follow it. This Kelley Melvin, he is a hero, I think.
This Kelley Melvin lived a long life, I hear. Born a long time ago, in 1937. Died not too long ago, in 2017. That’s a good long life. He must have seen a lot of things change in his time. He must have a lot of stories to tell. I hope he lived a happy life, and had no regrets in his life.
I don’t know much about this Kelley Melvin, but from what I hear, he was a good man. Wrote good stories, taught them kids, and lived a good life. That’s all you can ask for, I reckon. Just be good, do good, and live a good life. This is the most important thing in this world.
