Alright, so today I’m gonna spill the beans on something I was messing around with recently – this “incisive pass” thing. Basically, I was trying to get my AI model to be a bit more… well, incisive. Less random, more pinpoint accuracy, ya know?
First off, I started with the basics. Grabbed my usual dataset – a whole bunch of soccer passes, with all the player positions and ball trajectories. Cleaned it up, got rid of the garbage data, the usual prep work. Then, I built a simple model, a pretty standard neural network, to predict the endpoint of a pass based on the starting point and some other features like pass angle and power. Nothing fancy to start, just wanna see if it even works.

It worked… okay. But the problem was, it was predicting a general area, not a specific player. Like, “yeah, the ball will probably end up somewhere around the midfield,” which isn’t exactly helpful. So, I figured I needed to give the model a better understanding of the players. I tried feeding in the player IDs, thinking that would help. Nope. Still too vague.
That’s when I started messing around with the “incisive” part. I realized the model wasn’t really seeing the field. It needed to know who was where, and how that affected the pass. So, I started creating a feature that represented the distances to all the possible receivers. Basically, for every pass, I calculated how far the ball would travel to each potential teammate. This was a pain, lots of looping and distance formulas, but it seemed like the right track.
Then things got interesting. Instead of just feeding in raw distances, I started weighting them. Like, a receiver who’s wide open gets a higher weight. A receiver who’s closely marked gets a lower weight. I even factored in the defender’s position – if a defender was cutting off a passing lane, I drastically reduced the weight of that receiver. This took a lot of tweaking and fiddling, trying different weight combinations until I found something that seemed to click.
The key, I think, was creating a cost function that penalized the model for making “risky” passes. If the model predicted a pass to a closely marked player, it got penalized. If it predicted a pass that was easily intercepted, it got penalized even more. This forced the model to learn to prioritize safer, more accurate passes.
After a ton of trial and error, I finally got something that was… promising. The model was now predicting passes that were much more targeted. It was actually choosing open players and avoiding defenders. It wasn’t perfect – there were still some weird predictions here and there – but it was a huge improvement over the initial model.
So, what did I learn? First, context is everything. You can’t just throw data at a model and expect it to understand what’s going on. You need to give it the tools to see the bigger picture. Second, don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. A lot of this was just brute-force experimentation, trying different things until something worked. And third, sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. The core idea – weighting the distances to receivers – was pretty straightforward, but it made a world of difference.

I’m still working on refining this, but I’m pretty happy with the progress so far. Maybe next time, I’ll try incorporating some more advanced features, like player speed and acceleration.
