Alright, so I’ve been grinding Apex quite a bit lately, you know how it is. And I got this idea stuck in my head – I wanted to get some decent plays, specifically using the recon legends. Not just random kills, but actual smart plays using their info-gathering stuff. Felt like my game sense needed a bit of a workout in that department.
Getting Started with Recon
First thing, I had to pick my poison. Bloodhound seemed like the obvious starting point. Easy scan, straightforward. So I jumped into a few matches, focusing purely on trying to use that scan effectively. Hit the button, see the bad guys, ping ’em. Simple, right?

Well, kinda. It wasn’t always smooth sailing. Sometimes I’d scan too early, giving away my position. Other times, I’d scan, see three guys, ping them, and then my teammates would just be off looting somewhere else. Classic Apex, eh? Or I’d scan, push based on the info, and run straight into a different team waiting just outside the scan range. That happened more times than I’d like to admit.
- Tried Bloodhound first.
- Focused on timing the scans.
- Dealt with random teammates.
- Got ambushed a few times.
Switching it Up
After a few frustrating rounds, I thought, maybe Bloodhound’s too direct for the kind of ‘highlight’ I was picturing. So, I decided to give Crypto a whirl. Now, this guy’s different. You gotta park yourself somewhere safe and fly that drone around. Felt super awkward at first. I spent way too long in the drone, leaving my actual character vulnerable like a sitting duck.
Finding the rhythm took time. I practiced quickly deploying the drone, checking banners for squad counts, scanning an area ahead, and then recalling it fast. There were games where I barely fired my weapon because I was so focused on drone work. My damage numbers were probably terrible those rounds. But slowly, I started getting useful info. Pinging teams rotating, spotting campers, grabbing banners safely. It felt less about flashy kills and more about setting up the win.
That One Moment
Then came this one game on World’s Edge. We were rotating near Fragment. I parked Crypto behind some cover, sent the drone up high. Spotted a squad bunkered down in a building we needed to pass. Pinged them. Then I noticed another squad creeping up on them from the side. Pinged them too. My teammates actually paid attention this time. We waited for the two squads to start fighting, then moved in while they were weak.
I EMP’d the building fight just as we pushed. Total chaos for them. We cleaned them up pretty easily, then turned our attention to the third party who were also hit by the EMP. It wasn’t a crazy 1v3 clutch or anything, but coordinating that push based purely on the drone info? That felt really good. That felt like the kind of ‘recon highlight’ I was aiming for – using the brain, not just the trigger finger.
So yeah, that’s been my little project. Still working on it, trying Seer out sometimes too, but getting that Crypto play felt like a solid step. It’s less about the crazy frags and more about enabling the team, I guess. Still gotta hit your shots, obviously, but getting good intel makes a huge difference. Definitely gonna keep practicing this angle.
