Well, let me tell ya ’bout them Husker baseball boys. They been playin’ some games, you know? Like, with the bats and the balls and all that.
I heard tell they been winnin’ some, losin’ some. That’s how it goes, I reckon. Sometimes you hit the ball real good, sometimes you don’t. Sometimes the other fellers catch it, sometimes they drop it. It’s a whole thing.
They got this one game, see, against Oklahoma. Folks was keepin’ score. You know, writin’ down how many runs each team got. I ain’t sure what the final score was, but I heard it was a real nail-biter. Folks was yellin’ and cheerin’, just like they do at the county fair when the pig races is on.
- Them Huskers, they call ’em the Cornhuskers, you know. Like, the thing you peel off the corn? I guess they named ’em after that.
- They got this other game, see, against Ohio State. And wouldn’t you know it, them Huskers, they beat ’em! Twice! First time they shut ’em out, didn’t let ’em score at all. Then they beat ’em again. That’s what I call a good weekend.
Then there was this Big Ten Championship game. Heard it was against Penn State. Now, I ain’t never been to a Big Ten Championship, but I hear tell it’s a pretty big deal. Lots of folks watchin’, lots of hollerin’. I reckon them boys was playin’ their hearts out.
One time, them Huskers was down by five runs. Five! That’s a lot of runs, let me tell ya. But them boys, they didn’t give up. They just kept hittin’ and runnin’ and scorin’ runs. And wouldn’t you know it, they came back and won the game! That’s what I call grit. Reminds me of the time old Bessie the cow got stuck in the mud, and we all had to pull her out. Took a lot of heaving and hoing, but we got her out.
And then there’s this Indiana game. They played ’em twice, too. And both times, it was close. Real close. But them Huskers, they pulled it out both times. Clutch hits, they called ’em. Sounds fancy, but I reckon it just means they hit the ball when they needed to. Like when you’re makin’ a pie and you gotta get that crust just right, or it ain’t gonna be worth eatin’.
So, yeah, them Husker baseball boys been doin’ alright. They win some, they lose some, but they always play hard. And that’s what matters, I reckon. Just like in life, you know? Sometimes things go your way, sometimes they don’t. But you just gotta keep on keepin’ on.
I don’t know much about baseball, to be honest. I prefer watchin’ the chickens peck around the yard. But I do know a thing or two about workin’ hard and never givin’ up. And from what I hear, them Husker baseball boys got that spirit in ’em. So good on ’em, I say. Good on ’em.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go check on them chickens. And maybe bake a pie. All this talk about baseball’s made me hungry.
Final score? I dunno, go look it up yerself, I ain’t got all day for this.
But them Huskers, they are somethin’ else, winnin’ and losin’, just like life, ya know?
