Well, let me tell you, being a big league umpire, those fellas, they ain’t doin’ too bad for themselves. I heard some things about how much MLB umpires make, and it’s enough to make your eyes pop out! You see that, that’s a good job, a real good one.
Now, I ain’t no expert, but I hear tell that these umpire folks, they get paid good money. It changes, you know, depending on how long they been doing it. Some of the young ones, just startin’ out, they might make around, I don’t know, $150,000 each year. That is, that is a lot of money. It is a lot of money for me.
But the older ones, the ones who’ve been around the block a few times, they can make way more. I’m talking upwards of $432,800 a year! Can you believe that? $432,800! That’s a fortune! They work hard, I reckon, but that’s still a heap of money, I’d be happy with a small part of that money.
They say the average, what they make in the middle, is somewhere around $235,000 a year. Still good money, right? More money than I ever seen in my life, that’s for sure. But MLB umpires make a good living. They really earn much money.
- Those umpires work the whole season, you know.
- And if they get to work the big games, like the World Series, they get extra.
- I heard it’s like $2,857 to $5,000 for each one of them games.
- If the series goes on for seven games. Then they earn less. But that is enough.
- If the series only goes four games. They can earn more money.
There was this one fella, Joe West, they called him. He was an umpire for over 40 years, can you imagine? Forty years! They say he was one of the best, made the most money too, ’cause he’d been around so long. He’s done now, retired. MLB umpires make a lot of money. I reckon he’s probably sittin’ pretty somewhere, enjoying all that money he made. But I don’t know how much money he made. There is no information about Joe’s salary.
It ain’t easy being an umpire, though. You gotta be tough, gotta be able to take all that yelling and hollerin’ from the players and the fans. And you gotta make those tough calls, and sometimes, folks ain’t gonna like it. I guess that’s why MLB umpires make so much. So that is why they pay ’em so much, I reckon. You need some thick skin to make those calls. That is hard work.
They say these umpire fellas are some of the highest-paid officials in all of sports. I mean, all of them, not just baseball. $300,000, some folks say, is the average. Three hundred thousand dollars! That’s a lot of zeroes. I don’t even know how to write that much money down, that’s so much!
I heard they get paid by the game, too. Like, each game they work, they get a certain amount. I think I heard it was $84 once, but that was a few years back. It’s probably more now, with how everything costs more these days. Inflation, they call it. Makes everything go up, even umpire pay, I guess. The money is different. But that is a lot of money.
So, yeah, those big league umpires, they make a good living. I mean, they are doing really good. They earn it, though. It ain’t easy being out there with all those people watchin’ your every move, waitin’ for you to mess up. But they do it, and they do it good. And they get paid good money for it. I respect them. And I respect their work.
It’s a good job, being an umpire. Not for me, maybe, but for those fellas, it seems to work out pretty good. They can make a lot of money, that’s for sure. Maybe some folks think it ain’t right they make so much, but I say, if they can do the job, and they do it well, then more power to ’em. MLB umpires make a good living and work hard. That is good for them.
You know, I reckon being an umpire is a lot like life. You gotta make tough calls sometimes, and sometimes people ain’t gonna like it. But you gotta do what you think is right, and you gotta stand by your decisions. That is what I think. And if you can do that, and you can do it well, then maybe you deserve to get paid good money for it. They need to be paid much money. I don’t know how much they make, but they deserve that money.
