Okay, so I was digging into the Megami Tensei series the other day – you know, Shin Megami Tensei, Persona, all that good stuff. And it got me thinking: just how many demons are there across all these games? It’s gotta be a crazy high number, right?
So, I started my little quest. First, I figured I’d need a list of all the Megami Tensei games. That was easier said than done! There are so many main series games, spin-offs, and even mobile games.

Compiling the Game List
I spent a good chunk of time just listing out the games. I used a combination of what I know to try and find a complete list. I focused mainly on the core Shin Megami Tensei games and the major Persona titles, since those are the big ones.
The Demon Hunt Begins
Once I had a decent game list, I started looking for demon lists for each game. This is where things got really tricky. Some games have readily available lists online, but others? Not so much. I found myself sifting through fan-made wikis, old forum posts, and even some Japanese websites (thank goodness for translation tools!).
- I started with the more recent games, like Shin Megami Tensei V and Persona 5, since those have pretty comprehensive wikis.
- Then I moved on to the older titles, which was a lot harder. I had to piece things together from multiple sources.
- Some demons have different names in different games or translations, so I had to be careful to avoid double-counting.
The Numbers Game
After hours (and I mean hours) of searching and compiling, I started to get a rough idea. I wasn’t aiming for an exact number, because honestly, that would be near impossible. But I wanted a ballpark figure.
It’s safe to say there are hundreds upon hundreds of unique demons across the entire Megami Tensei franchise. And that’s not even counting variations or different forms of the same demon! I found lots of overlap, a bunch of unique demons, and a load of different demon classes. It’s a huge, sprawling bestiary of mythological creatures, gods, and monsters.
So, while I can’t give you a precise number, I can confidently say that the number of Megami Tensei demons is absolutely massive. It’s a testament to the series’ long history and its dedication to drawing from mythologies all over the * estimate is close to one thousand. I stopped counting after a certain point!
This was a fun little project, and it really made me appreciate the sheer scale of the Megami Tensei universe. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go back to fusing demons and saving the world (or Tokyo, at least).
