Okay, so I was playing Helldivers 2 with my buddies the other night, and, man, the default voice chat setup was driving me nuts. I love the game, it’s a blast, but not being able to easily coordinate with my team because I’m fumbling with voice activation? No thanks. I needed a push-to-talk button, and I needed it now.
So, I started digging around in the game’s settings. I figured, “There’s gotta be a way to change this.” I went through every menu, every option, tweaking things here and there. It wasn’t obvious at first, that’s for sure.

Finding the Setting
Finally, I found it! It wasn’t under “Audio” like I initially thought. It’s located at
- Options
- Mouse & Keyboard
- Change Bindings
- Scroll down near the bottom.
You’ll see “Voice Chat (Push to Talk)”. It’s unbound by default, which is why I was stuck with open mic.
Setting My Push-to-Talk Key
I clicked on the unbound setting and then I pressed my preferred key. I like using one of my side mouse buttons, that way I use it without taking my fingers off the movement keys. And with this change, my gameplay experience has got much better, and I feel more effective when playing with friends now.
And Boom! Problem solved. Now I can strategize, call out enemy positions, and generally be a much better teammate without annoying everyone with background noise. It’s a small change, but it makes a huge difference. It is much easier to smash bugs and bots with my mates now.
