Hey everyone, it’s your boy back with another post. Today, I’m diving into something that’s been on my mind lately – Fred Couples and his gear. You know, as a Seattle guy and a total gear junkie, anything Freddie does is kind of a big deal to me.
So, I recently stumbled upon this podcast where he was the guest. And man, it got me thinking. This guy is pushing 60, and his golf bag is a curious mix. We’re talking gray hair, a bit of a back issue, and a bag full of hybrids. Yeah, Fred Couples checks all those boxes now. But the guy still swings it at 64!
I couldn’t help but dig deeper. I started watching videos, reading articles, basically anything I could get my hands on about his setup. What really jumped out at me was the sheer number of woods and hybrids he carries. I’m talking driver, 3-wood, 5-wood, and then three more hybrids that take the place of his 4, 5, and 6-irons.
- First, I watched a bunch of videos of Fred playing. I wanted to see how he used all those woods and hybrids.
- Then, I read up on his interviews. It was interesting to hear him talk about his strong grip and how it helps him hit those high, soft shots.
- I even found out some personal stuff, like how he married his long-time girlfriend, Suzanne, back in 2022. And the sad story about his second wife, Thais, passing away from breast cancer in 2009. They never had kids.
Seriously, most amateurs I know don’t have that many, let alone a pro! He mentioned something about his strong grip helping him hit those high, soft shots. Makes sense, I guess.
But seeing Fred’s setup did get me thinking about my own bag. I’ve been playing around with different configurations. Adding a hybrid here, taking out a long iron there. It’s a constant work in progress, you know?
Trying Out Fred’s Bag
Inspired, I decided to try out a similar setup to Fred’s. Here’s how it went:
- Took out my 4, 5, and 6 irons. Felt weird at first, not gonna lie.
- Added in a couple of hybrids. Found some good deals online, nothing fancy.
- Hit the range to test it out. Started with some easy swings, just getting a feel for the hybrids.
- Played a few rounds with the new setup. Definitely noticed a difference, especially on those longer approach shots.
Honestly, I’m still getting used to it. But I can see why Fred does it. Those hybrids are forgiving, and they get the ball up in the air nicely. I’m not saying I’m going to be bombing it like Freddie anytime soon, but it’s definitely an interesting experiment.
So, yeah, that’s my little adventure into the world of Fred Couples’ golf bag. It’s been fun, and it’s definitely got me thinking differently about my own game. Who knows, maybe I’ll even add another hybrid or two. We’ll see!
Anyway, hope you guys enjoyed this one. Let me know what you think in the comments, and as always, happy golfing!
