Okay, so I’ve been sinking a lot of hours into Baldur’s Gate 3 lately, you know how it is. Great game, absolutely massive.
Figuring Out That Highlight Thing
Anyway, one thing that kinda bugged me for a bit was during combat turns. You know that glowing outline, the highlight that shows whose turn it is and who you’re targeting? Useful stuff, right? But outside of combat, when I’m just wandering around, exploring, looting every crate I see… that highlight sometimes felt like it was stuck on the last character I used or interacted with.

It wasn’t game-breaking or anything, just a little… distracting? Sometimes it made it harder to see small items on the ground, or just felt visually cluttered when I’m trying to soak in the scenery. I kept thinking, there’s gotta be a way to just, like, turn that off when I don’t need it.
So, I started poking around. First thing I did was pause the game and dive into the settings menu. Clicked through Interface options, Gameplay, Keybinds… looking for anything labeled “highlight” or “turn indicator” or something similar. Spent a good few minutes just reading through all the different toggles and sliders.
Didn’t immediately see an obvious “Turn Highlight Lock On/Off” button in the main interface settings, which surprised me a bit. I thought it’d be right there.
Then I started messing with the keyboard. I figured, maybe it’s a hotkey? I tried pressing a few common keys near WASD, you know, like Tab, Shift, Ctrl. Nothing seemed to directly control that specific highlight lock.
Finally, I think I stumbled upon it either by accident or maybe I saw the keybind listed somewhere less obvious in the settings menu after looking again. It turned out to be the O key on my keyboard. Just pressing ‘O’.
Pressed it once, and boom, the persistent highlight on my character vanished. Pressed it again, and it popped right back. Simple as that!

So, the process was basically:
- Get slightly annoyed by the constant highlight outside of combat.
- Dig through game settings menus (Interface, Controls).
- Try random keys around the usual movement/interaction keys.
- Eventually discover (or re-discover in the keybind list) that the O key toggles this character highlight lock on and off.
Now, when I’m done with a fight or just exploring, I tap O, and the screen feels cleaner. When combat starts, or if I want to easily track my selected character from afar, I tap O again to turn it back on. It’s a small thing, but it definitely made my exploration time feel a bit smoother and less visually noisy. Just wanted to share how I got that sorted out!
