Alright, so you wanna know if that John Daly fella, you know, the one with the long hair and the wild swing, if he won somethin’ with Arkansas? Yeah, I heard tell of him. Big fella, hits the ball a country mile, they say. Now, lemme tell you what I know, piece by piece, like I’m tellin’ it over the fence to my neighbor.
First off, they say he played for the Razorbacks. That’s the Arkansas team, you know, like the Hogs. Sounds about right, big fella like him, probably good at football too. But hold your horses, I ain’t sure he won no state championship with them Hogs in football. They say he was on the team, yeah, part of it, when they won. But him winnin’ it all by himself? Nah, I don’t think so.
What I do know is he’s a golfer, a real good one, or so they say. Won somethin’ called a “PGA Championship” back in ’91. Big deal, that was. Came outta nowhere, they say, like a dark horse. Ninth alternate, whatever that means, and then BAM! He wins the whole dang thing. That’s somethin’, ain’t it?
- They say he beat the golf course into submission. Sounds like somethin’ my husband used to say about weedin’ the garden! “Gotta beat this garden into submission!” he’d yell. Same kinda spirit, I reckon.
- And this Crooked Stick Golf Club, that’s where he won it. Fancy name, huh? Sounds like somethin’ you’d find in the city.
Now, they also say his boy, John Daly the Second, he’s playin’ golf for Arkansas too. Followin’ in his daddy’s footsteps, they say. Signed up with the Hogs, just like his old man. Proud papa, I bet. That’s nice, family stickin’ together, you know?
But back to the question, did John Daly win a state championship? See, that’s where it gets tricky. They talk about him bein’ part of a championship team in high school football. But mostly, they talk about him winnin’ that big golf thing, the PGA. That wasn’t no state championship, that was bigger, see? That was like, winnin’ the whole shebang, the whole country, maybe even the whole world, for all I know.
I heard tell he was back in Fayetteville for a Razorbacks football game recently. Cheerin’ on the Hogs, I guess. Maybe he was thinkin’ back to his football days, who knows? But that golf, that’s his claim to fame, that’s what they remember him for. Big swing, long drives, and winnin’ that big ol’ PGA thing.
So, to put it plain, John Daly was part of a state championship team in high school football. But he didn’t win it by himself, it wasn’t like he was the star quarterback or somethin’. He’s famous for winnin’ that big golf tournament, the PGA Championship. That’s a whole different ball game, ain’t it? He did Arkansas proud with that golf win, though, that’s for sure. Put ’em on the map, so to speak.
And that’s the long and short of it, as best as I can tell ya. Don’t go quotin’ me on it, now, I’m just an old woman tryin’ to make sense of all this sports talk. But that’s what I heard, and that’s what I believe to be true, near as I can figure.
