Alright, alright, let’s talk about this Coco Gauff tennis match, you know, the one everyone’s yappin’ about. I ain’t no fancy tennis expert or nothin’, but I watched it, and I got things to say.
First off, this Coco girl, she’s young, real young. Like, my grandkid’s age, maybe younger. But lemme tell ya, she’s got grit. Reminds me of myself back when I had to chase them chickens all over the yard. You gotta be quick and you gotta be tough, and that’s Coco, that’s what she is.
So, this match, it was a real nail-biter, they say. Started off kinda slow, with Coco losin’ the first set. Yeah, she lost that first one, 3-6, they said. I was thinkin’, “Oh no, this ain’t good.” But then, that girl, she just dug in her heels, you know? Like a stubborn mule pullin’ a plow.
- She started hittin’ them balls harder.
- She started runnin’ faster.
- She started yellin’ a little bit, too, which I liked. Gotta let ’em know you’re there!
Second set, she won it. 6-4, they said. See? Told ya she was tough. But then, the third set, oh boy, that was somethin’ else. Went all the way to a tiebreaker, they call it. Means they play till someone gets seven points, I think. It was back and forth, back and forth, like watchin’ a couple of squirrels fightin’ over a nut.
And that other girl, Zheng somethin’ or other, she was good too. Real good. They said she’s an Olympic champion. Fancy, huh? She was hittin’ them balls hard, makin’ Coco run all over the place. But Coco, she just kept fightin’. She wouldn’t give up, not one bit. Reminded me of tryin’ to get that last biscuit at Sunday dinner – gotta fight for what you want!
And you know what? She won! Won the whole dang thing! Seven to two in the tiebreaker, they said. Coco Gauff, the youngest to win some kinda big finals in 20 years, they were sayin’ on the TV. That’s somethin’, ain’t it? Made me proud, even though I don’t know her from Adam. It’s just good to see a young’un work hard and get somewhere.
They played in some place called Riyadh, which I heard is far, far away. And the match, it lasted for three hours! Three hours! Can you imagine? That’s longer than it takes me to make a whole quilt! My old bones would be achin’ somethin’ fierce after that. But these young folks, they got energy, I tell ya. Energy like a bunch of puppies.
They played in a big stadium, too, Arthur Ashe Stadium, they called it. Heard it’s a good place to watch tennis, with good seats and all. Probably got fancy water stations and all that, not like my old well out back. Probably got folks walkin’ around sellin’ all sorts of snacks, too. Not just my homemade cornbread, that’s for sure. And it took place in some big tennis center, somethin’ about Billie Jean King, a name I heard once or twice on the TV. Sounds important.
So yeah, that’s what I thought about the Coco Gauff tennis match. It was excitin’, even for an old lady like me. Made me wanna go out and whack a few tennis balls myself, but then I remembered my knees ain’t what they used to be. Maybe I’ll just stick to watchin’ from my armchair. But good for Coco, I say. Good for her.
Anyway, that’s all I got to say ‘bout it. It was a good match, that girl Coco is somethin’ special, and I hope she keeps on winnin’. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go check on my garden.
