Alright, let’s talk about them Pirates, the baseball team, you know? Not the ones with the eye patches and parrots, though that would be somethin’ else, wouldn’t it? Heard some folks call ’em the “Bucs” or somethin’, fancy names for a bunch of fellas hittin’ a ball, I reckon.
These Pirates, they been playin’ a long, long time. Started way back when, even before I was born, and that was a spell ago, let me tell ya. They used to be called somethin’ else, the Alleghenys, or somethin’ like that, way back in 1882. Now they play in a big ol’ place by the river, PNC Park they call it. Seats a whole heap of people, 39,000 they say, imagine that! Must be louder than a hog callin’ contest on a Saturday night.
These Pirates, they play a lot of games. Thousands of ’em, more than I can count on my fingers and toes, that’s for sure. They win some, they lose some, that’s the way it goes. But sometimes, they do somethin’ special. They got pitchers, you see, those fellas who throw the ball real fast. And sometimes, one of them fellas wins 20 games in a season. That’s a big deal, like findin’ a five-dollar bill in your old coat pocket.
Now, they say it’s happened a whole bunch of times, 62 times to be exact. That’s a lot of winnin’ if you ask me. Heard tell of a young fella, Nick Maddox, back in the old days, 1907 or somethin’, he won 20 games when he was just a young’un. Must’ve had an arm like a whip, that boy. Then there was another fella, John Smiley, won 20 in 1991. He was an All-Star, they say, fancy that! And some fella named Cooper, he won the most ever, over 200 games. That’s more wins than I got chickens, and that’s sayin’ somethin’.
- Pitchers winnin’ 20 games is a big thing for the Pirates.
- Happened a whole bunch of times in their history.
- Young fellas and old fellas, all winnin’ those 20 games.
They got records, too, these Pirates. Somethin’ about hittin’ triples, runnin’ real fast and hittin’ the ball a long way, I guess. And they played a game once where the other team didn’t get a single hit. Imagine that! Must’ve been like tryin’ to catch a greased pig, that ball. These Pirates, they keep playin’, year after year. Win or lose, they keep at it.
Folks follow ’em, ya know? They keep track of the winnin’ and the losin’, the hits and the runs. They got newspapers and such that write all about it. Must be important to some folks, this baseball. Me, I like watchin’ the chickens peck in the yard, but to each their own, I always say. These Pirates, they’re part of the history, I guess, like the old oak tree in the pasture, been there forever, seen it all. And they keep on keepin’ on, winnin’ some, losin’ some, and every now and then, one of them pitchers wins 20 games, and folks get all riled up about it. Just like when old Bessie the cow had twins, somethin’ to talk about for a spell.
So, that’s the story of the Pirates and their 20-game winners. A whole bunch of ’em over the years, some young, some old, all throwin’ that ball and winnin’ those games. It’s a part of their story, a part of what makes ’em the Pirates. And who knows, maybe this year, or next year, another fella will step up and win 20 games. And the folks will cheer, and the papers will write about it, and it’ll be somethin’ special, just like it always is.
