Alright, so I’ve been messing around with warlocks in Baldur’s Gate 3, trying to figure out the best cantrips to use. I mean, everyone talks about Eldritch Blast, and yeah, it’s good, but I wanted to see what else was out there, and if anything could make my warlock even more awesome.
My Experiment Begins
So, I created a warlock character, nothing fancy, just your standard pact-of-the-blade type. I made to try out a few different things.

The Contenders
I focused on these cantrips:
- Eldritch Blast: The classic. Gotta have it.
- Blade Ward: Seemed like a good way to avoid getting smashed.
- Friends: For those times when you need to, you know, persuade someone.
- Minor Illusion: Distractions are always useful.
- True Strike: Sounded great on paper for hitting big attacks.
Putting them to the Test
I started running around, getting into fights, and trying stuff out.
-
First, Eldritch Blast, as expected, rocked. It’s just reliable damage, and when you add those invocations later, it gets even better.
-
Blade Ward? It was okay. I found that it was helpfull, especially when I was surrounded by, like, three goblins. Saved my butt a few times, but it uses up an action, so you’re not attacking that turn.
-
Friends… man, this one is tricky. It’s great for getting through conversations, but people get really mad at you afterward if you fail the check after casting. I learned that the hard way.
-
Minor Illusion, I love this one. I used it to lure enemies away, to create fake cover, all sorts of sneaky stuff. It really depends on how creative you are.
-
True Strike,I found it pretty disappointing. It takes an action to cast, and then you only get advantage on your next attack roll. Most of the time, I was better off just attacking twice.
Final Thoughts
After all that, here’s what I figured out. Eldritch Blast is still king. It’s your bread and butter. But don’t sleep on Minor Illusion. It’s a great utility spell, and if you can get creative with it, it can be super powerful. Blade Ward has its place, too. Friends, it work very well. True strike,I think it’s skippable.
The best combo, for me at least, has been Eldritch Blast and Minor Illusion. Damage and trickery. It is great!
