Alright, y’all, let’s talk about them baseball fellas, the Houston Astros and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Don’t know much about fancy stats and all that, but I can tell ya who’s been hittin’ the ball and who ain’t.
Now, these Astros, they been around a while. Heard tell they played the Pirates a whole bunch of times, somethin’ like 346 wins and 369 losses. That’s a lot of games, I reckon. Folks keep track of all this stuff, ya know, head-to-head stats they call it. Championships, wins, losses, all that jazz. Seems important to some folks.
I remember this one game, back in April, the Astros beat the Pirates 8 to 2. Took ’em two hours and thirty-nine minutes. Folks say that’s a quick game. Then, there was another time, way back in 2019, when the Pirates whooped the Astros, 14 to 2. That was a long one, over three hours. Guess you win some, you lose some, that’s how it goes.
They got this fella, Moises Alou, they say he hit the ball real good for the Astros. Highest batting average, whatever that means. He musta been somethin’ special.

So, these two teams, the Astros and the Pirates, they been battlin’ it out for years. Like I said, the Astros got more losses than wins against the Pirates overall. But that don’t mean nothin’ for any one game, ya hear? Anythin’ can happen on any given day. They got fellas hittin’ home runs (that’s when they smack the ball real far), and fellas strikin’ out (that’s when they miss the ball three times).
Now, if you wanna know what’s happenin’ in a game right now, you gotta look at the live coverage and scoring. They got folks watchin’ every pitch and writin’ down what happens. Every hit, every run, every out. They put it all up on the TV and the internet, so you can follow along even if you ain’t at the game. Me, I like listenin’ on the radio, it’s like they’re right there talkin’ to ya.
Then there’s all this talk about player stats. Who’s hittin’ good, who’s pitchin’ good, who’s catchin’ good. They got numbers for everythin’. How many times a fella gets a hit (that’s a good thing), how many times he strikes out (that’s a bad thing), how many runs he helps score (that’s a real good thing). They got fellas with lots of RBIs, that’s runs batted in, means they brought their buddies home. They keep track of all this stuff, and it helps folks figure out who’s playin’ well and who ain’t.
They got fellas that run real fast and steal bases. They call that stolen bases, or SB. And sometimes they get caught, that’s a CS. Lots of numbers, lots of letters. It can get confusin’, but it’s all part of the game.
Seems like everythin’s a statistic these days. How many people showed up to watch the game, how long the game lasted, how many times a fella got on base. They even keep track of how many pitches the pitcher throws! Can you believe that? All these numbers, and in the end, it all comes down to whether you score more runs than the other team. That’s baseball for ya.
So, whether you’re rootin’ for the Astros or the Pirates, or you just like watchin’ good baseball, remember it’s all just a game. Sometimes your team wins, sometimes they lose. But it’s always fun to watch them fellas try their best. And don’t let all them fancy stats confuse ya too much. Just enjoy the game, and maybe have a hot dog while you’re at it.
And that’s all I gotta say about that. Hope it makes some sense to ya. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper.
