Alright, so you wanna know about this Sloane Stephens and her Wimbledon, huh? Okay, okay, I’ll tell ya what I know. It ain’t gonna be fancy, mind you, just plain talk, like you’re sittin’ here with me on the porch, sippin’ sweet tea.
First off, this Sloane girl, she’s a tennis player, you know, one of them folks who smack that little yellow ball back and forth. She’s been around a while, had her ups and downs, like all of us. Ups and downs, yeah, like my biscuits sometimes, they rise nice and fluffy, other times…flat as a pancake.
Now, this Wimbledon thing, it’s a big deal, a real big deal. It’s like the county fair, but for tennis. Everybody who’s anybody in tennis shows up there. Sloane, she’s been there too. They say she made a comeback at Wimbledon a few years back, in 2017. That’s what they told me, anyhow. Comeback? Like comin’ back from visitin’ your sister down in the city? I guess so.
I heard tell that she didn’t start off so good this year, lost a match at the US Open. Lost the first nine games! Can you imagine? Nine games! That’s like losin’ all your chickens to a fox in one night. But then, she fought back, this girl, she did. Almost won, but not quite. Fought back like a mama bear protectin’ her cubs, that’s what they said. But still lost in the end, which is a darn shame.
- She lost, but she fought hard. That’s important, you know.
- Like plantin’ a garden, sometimes the bugs eat your tomatoes, but you just plant ‘em again next year.
- You gotta keep tryin’, that’s the way life is.
They say Sloane, she’s married to some football player, Jozy something. Good for her, I say. A good man is hard to find, like a ripe watermelon in January. And her folks, they were athletes too, swimmers and football players. Guess it runs in the family, like my grandma’s recipe for apple pie. Everyone in the family can make it, but it never tastes quite as good as hers, no matter how hard we try.
Now, this year, 2024, they’re sayin’ she’s ready to go again. Ready to hop on the tennis bus, they say. Well, that’s good. You gotta be ready, gotta be strong, gotta be willin’ to sweat a little, or a lot. Like workin’ in the fields all day, pickin’ cotton. It ain’t easy, but you gotta do it.
She won a match at Wimbledon this year, beat some French girl. Straight sets, they call it. That means she won without too much fuss, like makin’ a bed with crisp, clean sheets. Nice and smooth. But then…well I don’t know how far she got after that. They don’t tell me everything, you know. Just bits and pieces, like gossip over the fence.
Wimbledon is a big deal, like I said. It’s in England, across the ocean. Fancy folks go there, wearin’ their fancy clothes. I bet they got good food there too, not just fried chicken and collard greens, like we got here. But I reckon Sloane, she’s used to all that fancy stuff now.
I heard she does other things besides tennis, too. Like what? I don’t know, maybe she knits, maybe she bakes, maybe she likes to fish. We all need a little somethin’ else to do, you know. Can’t just be tennis all the time. Like me, I like to sit on the porch and watch the birds, or tend to my roses. Gives you a bit of peace, it does.
So, that’s the story of Sloane Stephens and Wimbledon, as far as I know it. She’s a fighter, that one. A tough cookie. And she’ll keep on playin’, keep on fightin’, keep on tryin’. Just like the rest of us, tryin’ to make our way in this world. And that, my friend, is all there is to it.
She’s had her share of good times and bad. Kinda like that old tractor out back, sometimes it runs smooth, sometimes it sputters and stalls. But you just keep fixin’ it up and keep on goin’. That’s what life is about, ain’t it? Just keepin’ on keepin’ on.
