Okay, so I wanted to squeeze every last drop of performance out of Apex Legends today. I’d heard about using launch commands to cap the FPS, and figured I’d give it a shot. My rig’s pretty decent, but sometimes I get these weird stutters, especially in big fights.
First, I opened up Steam. You know, the usual drill. Right-clicked on Apex Legends in my library, and went to “Properties”.

Then, I clicked on the “General” tab. Down at the bottom, there’s this box labeled “Launch Options”. That’s where the magic happens.
I typed in +fps_max followed by the frame rate I wanted. I started with +fps_max 144, because my monitor’s refresh rate is 144Hz. Seemed like a good starting point. you need space after command, I must type space.
I closed the Properties window and fired up Apex. Boom! Right away, I could feel things were smoother. I kept an eye on the in-game FPS counter (you can enable that in the Apex settings, by the way, under “Gameplay”), and yeah, it was sticking right around 144.
Experimenting with Different Caps
But I’m a tinkerer, you know? So I tried a few different values. I went lower, to like, +fps_max 120, just to see if it made a difference. Honestly, not a huge change. But, hey, every little bit helps, right?
- +fps_max 0: This is supposed to remove the cap completely. I tried it, but it didn’t seem to do much for me. Maybe my system was already maxing out what it could handle.
- +fps_max (your monitor refresh rate): This is probably the sweet spot for most people. Matches your FPS to your monitor, so you don’t get any screen tearing.
Finally, I settled on +fps_max 144, after my testing. It felt the most consistent for me. The stuttering was way down, and firefights felt a lot more responsive.
It is so easy, and I get more smooth game play,so nice!
