Okay, so I was messing around with Monopoly Go, as you do, and I noticed this “Downtime Derby” thing. I’d seen it pop up before but never really paid attention. This time, though, I was bored and figured, “Why not?”
First, I made sure my game was updated. Nothing worse than trying to play an event with an old version. Just go to the app store, search, and hit that update button if it’s there. Mine was good to go, so I jumped right in.

Getting Started
The Downtime Derby thing showed up as a little icon on the main screen. I tapped it, and it took me to this whole new board. It looked like a regular Monopoly board, but, like, smaller. Less properties and stuff.
Playing the Game
Basically, you roll the dice like normal, and you move around the board. The big difference is that when you land on certain spaces, you get these “pickaxes.” These are the key to the whole thing.
I started racking up pickaxes pretty quickly. Just rolling and landing on the right spots. Seemed like every other roll I was getting some. I was not using any tricks, just casual playing.
Using the Pickaxes
Once you have pickaxes, you use them to, well, pick at things. There’s this grid of tiles, and you tap on them to reveal what’s underneath. Some tiles have prizes, like dice rolls or money. Others have nothing.
It is really a simple game.
My Strategy (or Lack Thereof)
Honestly, I didn’t have much of a strategy. I just tapped on tiles randomly. Sometimes I’d get lucky and find a bunch of prizes in a row. Other times, I’d hit a bunch of empty tiles.

It is important to use all pickaxes before time is up. I think it is better than let them go to waste.
Wrapping Up
I played the Downtime Derby for, I don’t know, maybe half an hour? I managed to get a decent amount of extra dice rolls and some cash, which is always helpful. It wasn’t anything mind-blowing, but it was a fun little distraction.
One thing I noticed is that events in Monopoly Go are time limited, so I think It is always nice keep an eye on the timer and make sure I finished everything before it disappeared.
Would I play it again? Sure. It’s a nice way to kill some time and get some extra goodies. It’s not rocket science, just tapping and hoping for the best.
