Alright, guys, so I’ve been diving back into the OG Pokemon games, you know, Red, Blue, and Yellow. And I gotta say, getting a good moveset for your Gyarados in Gen 1 is actually kinda tricky. There’s a lot of conflicting info out there, so I wanted to figure it out for myself and, of course, share my findings with you all.
The Struggle is Real
First off, let me tell you, leveling up a Magikarp is a PAIN. It’s basically useless until level 15, just knowing splash, I started with switching it out at the start of every battle to get it some experience, which is slow, It felt like it took forever, but finally, FINALLY, my little Magikarp evolved into a beastly Gyarados.

Experimenting with TMs
Now, the fun part – figuring out the best moves. I spent hours, I mean HOURS, messing around with different TMs and battling. I had my notebook open, I got Gyarados, and I’m starting to teach it some TMs.
- Hydro Pump:Learned it at Level 41. I was so excited. This is Gyarados’s signature move, It’s powerful, but that 80% accuracy, man, it’s a gamble.
- Body Slam:Many people on the Web recommend this one, it is a normal type TM, I mean, STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) is a big deal in Gen 1, So I definitely gave this a shot. Plus, that chance to paralyze? Sweet!
- Blizzard/Ice Beam:I tried both, Ice is super effective against those pesky Dragonites, but the accuracy difference.
- Thunderbolt:I thought that Thunderbolt is strong, but it’s useless for my Gyarados.
My Final(ish) Moveset
After all that experimenting, here’s what I’ve settled on:
- Hydro Pump: I know, I know, the accuracy. But when it hits, it HITS. It’s just too powerful to pass up, in my opinion.
- Body Slam: Good damage, good accuracy, and that paralysis chance. It’s just a solid, reliable move.
- Hyper Beam: It’s so strong, In Gen 1, if you KO an opponent with Hyper Beam, you don’t need to recharge. Broken!
- Blizzard:I went with Blizzard over Ice Beam just for the raw power.
I’m still messing around with it, I beat the Elite Four, no problem. But, that’s the beauty of these old games – there’s always something new to discover. Good luck with your own Gyarados, and let me know if you’ve found a moveset that works even better!
