Okay, guys, let’s talk about planning routes. I’ve been messing around with this for a while, and I finally think I’ve got a system that works, at least for me.
It all started because I was getting lost. A lot. Seriously, I’d have a general idea of where I wanted to go, but then I’d end up wandering around aimlessly, wasting time and getting frustrated. So, I knew I needed a better way.

First, I tried just winging it. You know, “I’ll figure it out as I go.” That was a disaster. Ended up in some sketchy neighborhoods, added like an hour to my trip. Nope, not doing that again.
Then, I started using online map apps. That helped a little, giving me turn-by-turn directions. But, I found myself staring at my phone the whole time, not really enjoying the journey. Plus, sometimes the app would glitch or the battery would die, and I’d be back to square one.
My Current Method
So, here’s what I do now, and it’s been working pretty well:
- Pick a destination. Obviously, you need to know where you’re going.
- Grab online map. I still use it, but just for the initial planning.
- Look for major landmarks. I’m talking about big roads, parks, maybe a well-known building. Something that’s easy to spot.
- Write down the general route. Not every single turn, but the key streets or directions. Like, “Head north on Main Street, then turn left at the big park.”
- Visualize the route. I try to picture myself going through it, imagining what I’ll see along the way.
- Simplify. Make it easy to remember.
The key is to have a general plan, but not be a slave to the turn-by-turn directions. It’s about knowing the overall path and using landmarks to guide you. This way, I can actually look around and enjoy the ride, instead of being glued to my phone.
It’s not perfect, of course. Sometimes I still make a wrong turn, but it’s much easier to get back on track because I have a general sense of where I am. And honestly, sometimes those wrong turns lead to interesting discoveries!
So, that’s my system. Give it a shot, and let me know what you think. Maybe it’ll help you get un-lost, too! zzz…
